Digital Twin Technology Drives Smart Water Management: Taipei Water Department Wins 2026 Smart City Innovative Application Award for Excellence in Water Governance
The Taipei Water Department has once again received national recognition. At the 2026 Smart City Innovative Application Award ceremony held today (March 17), organized by the Taipei Computer Association, the Taipei Water Department stood out among numerous participants with its project, “Building a Resilient Smart Water Supply System for Greater Taipei through Digital Twin and Data-Driven Technologies,” winning the Municipal Innovative Application Award. Commissioner Fan Huan-ying accepted the award on behalf of the Taipei Water Department, showcasing Taipei City’s outstanding achievements in smart technology and urban governance. In response to the challenges posed by global extreme weather, TWD has been actively advancing digital transformation. The award-winning project centers on the adoption of digital twin technology, supported by a large network of sensors deployed across the city’s water supply system. Real-time hydraulic data are transmitted to a virtual model, enabling precise simulation of the physical pipeline network and providing comprehensive insights into the operation of the Greater Taipei water supply pipeline system. Commissioner Fan noted that by integrating virtual models with the physical network, digital twin technology enables real-time monitoring of water pressure and flow. When combined with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, big data analytics can be used not only to predict potential risks but also to simulate system responses during anomalies, optimize dispatch decisions, and significantly enhance operational efficiency, ensuring a stable water supply for the public. The Department emphasized that the ultimate goal of smart water management is to provide citizens with a more stable and higher-quality water supply. Looking ahead, the department will continue to deepen the integration of digital technologies with water governance, further reduce leakage rates, and leverage intelligent management systems to strengthen Taipei’s resilience as a leading international smart city.
